Tout d’abord, comme nous le voyons fréquemment dans ce blog, pour étoffer son vocabulaire, il faut être exposé à la langue. Par la communication écrite, verbale, et par des activités qui favorisent la réflexion et la mémorisation. Ensuite, il faut tirer le meilleur profit de cette communication et de ces activités avec un peu de méthode afin d’enrichir votre vocabulaire en anglais. Voici comment je vous conseille de procéder :
Tout d’abord, c’est tout bête, mais prenez le temps de remplir un carnet au fur et à mesure avec les mots anglais que vous découvrez dans vos lectures, dans les films que vous visionnez… Pas tous, bien sûr, mais ceux qui retiennent votre attention.
Personnellement, j’utilise des petits carnets KoverBook de Clairefontaine, qui, avec un ingénieux système de rabats et de languettes, permettent de cacher et d’apprendre les mots plus facilement. En réalité, n’importe quel carnet fait l’affaire. « The simpler the better ! « 😄
Vous pouvez organiser un répertoire et relever les mots alphabétiquement, mais je n’en vois pas l’intérêt. Je trouve que c’est plus simple de noter les mots / expressions au fur et à mesure des activités que l’on fait (regarder un film, lire un livre…) et revenir dessus plus tard (si le sens du mot n’est pas urgent pour la compréhension de l’histoire…) mais ceci dit, vous faîtes comme vous préférez. A mon sens, la thématique des mots, leur contexte vous aideront plus facilement que leur ordre alphabétique à passer aux étapes suivantes : VERIFIER et MEMORISER.
Une fois que les mots sont répertoriés, il convient de vérifier deux choses : leur SIGNIFICATION et leur PRONONCIATION. Vous allez pouvoir trouver ces 2 éléments grâce aux dictionnaires en ligne, simples à utiliser et gratuits :
✔ Les Dictionnaires multilingue : Linguee, Reverso, WordReference…
Personnellement, je ne suis pas adepte de Google Traduction qui me semble limité, mais je fais plutôt confiance à Linguee, qui est depuis 2010 le plus grand dictionnaire multilingue du monde. Voici à quoi ressemble la page du dictionnaire Linguee…
Quelque soit votre outil d’aide à la traduction, prenez systématiquement l’habitude de VERIFIER LA PRONONCIATION d’un mot en cliquant sur 🔊 et écoutez les différences entre l’anglais américain et l’anglais britannique.
✔ Les Dictionnaires bilingue plus « académiques » : Larousse anglais-français, ou tout en anglais avec Cambridge, Oxford.
✔ Booster votre imagination pour booster votre mémoire : visualiser un mot ou faire appel à son imagination en associant le sens de ce mot à quelque chose, permet d’ancrer ce mot dans votre mémoire. Cette méthode a ses limites, mais grâce à elle, vous pouvez arriver à retenir un nombre surprenant de nouveaux mots !
Un exemple : Comment se rappeler que YARN signifie du fil ou de la laine ? Je note que ce mot YARN ressemble beaucoup à l’animal yack. Je visualise cet animal, plein de fil de laine et donc, je me rappelle que YARN signifie fil ou laine. Plus d’exemples ?
Comment se rappeler que FLIMSY signifie fragile, peu solide ? Je visualise un film plastique, qui a ces caractéristiques. Les lettres ne sont pas dans le même ordre mais cela m’aide à me rappeler que le FLIMSY signifie fragile, peu solide.
Comment se rappeler que BULLY veut dire intimider, persécuter ? J’imagine un personnage gros comme une bulle, avec un air antipathique, qui intimide les personnes. Il vient ensuite naturellement que BULLY se traduit par intimider, persécuter.
Cette méthode fonctionne plutôt bien car il n’y a pas besoin d’avoir révisé et révisé longuement les mots pour s’en rappeler. Il n’y a pas de règle stricte, vos associations d’images vous sont personnelles et c’est pour cela que vous vous en souviendrez plus naturellement.

How do you expand your English vocabulary?
First of all, as we frequently see in this blog, to expand your vocabulary, you have to be exposed to the language. Through written and verbal communication, and through activities which encourage reflection and memorization. Then, you need to make the most of this communication and these activities with a bit of method in order to enrich your English vocabulary. Here is how I advise you to proceed:
First of all, it’s just silly, but take the time to fill a notebook as you go along with the English words you discover in your readings, in the movies you watch… Not all of them, of course, but the ones that catch your attention. Any notebook will do. The simpler the better ! 😄
You can organize a directory and list the words alphabetically, but I don’t see the point. I find it’s easier to write down the words/phrases all along the activities you do (while waching a movie, reading a book…) and come back to it later (if the meaning of the word is not urgent for the understanding of the story…) but that said, just do as you prefer ! In my opinion, the theme of the words, their context will help you more easily than their alphabetical order to move on to the next steps: CHECK and MEMORIZE.
Once new words are listed, two things have be checked: the MEANING and the PRONUNCIATION of the word. You will be able to find these 2 elements within the following pronunciation tools:
✔ Multilingual Dictionaries: Linguee, Reverso, WordReference… they are globally easy to use and free.
Personally, I’m not a fan of Google Translation, which seems limited to me, but I rather trust Linguee, which is since 2010 the largest multilingual dictionary in the world.
Systematically, get into the habit of checking the pronunciation of a word by clicking on 🔊 and listen to the differences between American English and British English.
✔ The Bilingual « Academic » Dictionaries: Larousse, Cambridge, Oxford…
✔ Boost your imagination to boost your memory: visualizing a word or appealing to your imagination by associating the meaning of this word with something else, allows you to anchor this word in your memory.
An example: How to remember that YARN means thread or wool? I note that the word YARN sounds a lot like the animal yak. I visualize this animal, full of yarn and therefore, I remember that YARN means thread or wool. More examples ?
How can we remember that FLIMSY means fragile, not very strong ? I visualize a plastic FILM, which has these characteristics. The letters are not in the same order but it helps me to remember that FLIMSY means fragile, not very strong.
How do we remember that BULLY means intimidate, persecute? I imagine a character as big as a Bubble (= BULLE in French !), with an unpleasant air, who intimidates people. Then it comes naturally that BULLY means to intimidate, to persecute.
This method works quite well because there is no need to have to review and revise the words at length to remember them. There is no strict rule, your picture associations are personal to you and that’s why you will remember them more naturally.
